Croatia beats Denmark and tops Group 1 of League A of the Nations League

The Croats beat the Danes (2-1) on Thursday night on their pitch. This success allows them to take the lead from the Blues group in the League of Nations alone.

Croatia won Thursday night (2-1) on their lawn in Zagreb against Denmark. Zlatko Dalic’s men lead Group 1, the Blues, who at the same time defeated Austria (2-0) at the Stade de France.

After a first half relatively dominated by the locals but poor at times, the 22 players returned with more intentions after the break. Croatia opened the scoring through Borna Sosa (49th), who tricked Schmeichel with a flat left foot, after a corner. After opening the scoring, Luka Modric’s teammates had two new chances. Ivan Perisic missed the break on the hour mark (58′) by narrowly missing a free-kick, then Schmeichel parried a good curling shot from Modric (64′).

Eriksen’s jewel will have been of no use

The match then escalated. First, the Danish captain, Christian Eriksen, equalized with a sublime shot into the skylight (77th), at the entrance to the surface, and allowed his team to temporarily maintain the lead of the group. But two minutes later (79th), Rennais Lovro Majer, who had just entered the match, gave Croatia the lead with a powerful cross from the left. A Danish last chance (90th + 2nd) failed again to tip the scoreboard, without success.

The Croats will travel to Austria on Sunday night (8:45 p.m.), while the Danes will host the Blues on the last day of the Nations League group stage. A final day that promises to be decisive as it will allow deciding between the Croatian and Danish teams, currently only one point apart, in the face of a place in the Final Four.
