Cummins Introduces New Zero Emission Power Solution Technologies

Its fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell engine, LFP battery and ePowertrain technologies from its recent Meritor acquisition are shown for the first time.

COLUMBUS, Ind., September 22, 2022–(BUSINESSWIRE)–This week, Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) unveils its zero-emission technology platform at IAA Transportation, the world’s largest mobility trade show, in Hannover, Germany. A selection of new technologies from Cummins along with ePowertrain technologies from its recent Meritor acquisition will be shown to the public for the first time. Backed by more than a century of experience as a world leader in power supply, Cummins reinforces its commitment to deliver comprehensive zero emission technologies globally.

“Cummins has a wealth of application expertise and we are uniquely positioned to offer solutions that truly fit the needs of commercial applications,” said Amy Davis, vice president and president of Cummins’ New Power business. “Implementing a net zero future will require the use of a variety of technologies. It is our extensive zero emissions portfolio that will allow us to meet the diverse demands of customers in the sectors that are most difficult to satisfy and make the energy transition possible. »

One of the key zero emission products Cummins is showcasing at the IAA is its fourth generation hydrogen fuel cell engine. Designed to meet the performance, packaging and duty cycle requirements of medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses, the fuel cell technology comes in two module types: 135 kW single and 270 kW dual.

Scania in Europe and Daimler Trucks in North America have announced collaborations with Cummins to develop and integrate these next-generation fuel cell engines into demonstration vehicles. These systems use fourth generation variable pressure technology to achieve higher operating temperatures, density and power nodes, making it easier to integrate the system into vehicles. They also feature an extremely durable, high-efficiency duty cycle for a lower total cost of ownership.

“We know our customers have different needs and difficult-to-support duty cycles, so we’re focused on continuous improvement and innovation,” said Amy Adams, division vice president of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies at Cummins. “We are developing hydrogen fuel cell technology that provides the capabilities and flexibility to meet and exceed the energy requirements of commercial vehicles on the road, demonstrating that hydrogen is a viable solution to decarbonize the economy. »

IAA attendees will also see the following for the first time: a propulsion system assembled with Cummins’ new Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, as well as the 17xe ePowertrain and power control and accessory system ( PCAS) from Meritor. Cummins recently added them to its portfolio when it acquired Meritor. The ePowertrain system is based on advanced shaft, motor and inverter technologies to deliver performance, efficiency and packaging benefits at a competitive price. The PCAS solution also allows you to power the system as needed and control the necessary subsystems while reducing package size and facilitating integrations.

Cummins is adding an LFP battery to its lithium-ion battery lineup to expand support for electric utility vehicles. This LFP solution gives customers access to faster-charging, longer-lasting batteries, making it ideal for the medium-duty truck and school bus markets. With its multi-chemical strategy, Cummins is in a unique position to further expand its manufacturing capabilities and diversify its supply chain, providing customers with more cost-effective electrification solutions.

“We are providing customers with options that allow them to more quickly adapt to a zero-emissions future,” said Brian Wilson, general manager, Cummins Electrified Components Division. “With the recent acquisition of Meritor and our new multi-chemical approach, we will be able to customize our solutions and provide a one-stop shop for customer propulsion needs. »

The Cummins portfolio includes four batteries, each targeting different use cases and duty cycles, while showing excellent complementarity: the LFP option, as well as three Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries named BP95E, BP74E and BP30E. The BP95E is Cummins’ next-generation solution that prioritizes higher power density in applications for customers requiring more weight-sensitive solutions or longer reach. The BP30E is ideal for applications with limited space and extreme demands, while the BP74E is the foundation for Cummins innovation and advancement in battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
