A new product prohibited in sport. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has decided to ban Tramadol in competition from 2024, according to a statement shared after a meeting of its executive council on Friday, September 23.

Tramadol, a synthetic opiate and painkiller frequently used by athletes, was under surveillance but was not listed on WADA’s list of prohibited products and substances until now. On the other hand, it was prohibited by the medical regulations of the International Cycling Union (UCI) since 2019. The Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana was also disqualified in August from the last Tour de France for using Tramadol.
“The Executive Committee has followed the recommendation of the expert panel to ban Tramadol in competition from January 1, 2024”said the AMA. The delay will allow athletes and their entourage to implement this new ban. “Research and studies conducted by the AMA have confirmed the potential of Tramadol to improve physical performance”also justified the agency.
In addition, the AMA also placed cannabis on the list of prohibited products. In September 2021, just weeks after the suspension of Sha’Carri Richardson, which deprived the American star sprinter of the Tokyo Olympics, WADA had indicated that it would reconsider the inclusion of cannabis as a prohibited substance.
