More than 100 large wind energy companies call on the signatories of the Agreement to Paris to streamline planning and permitting, upgrade grid infrastructure, and transition energy markets to accelerate renewables deployment.
NEW YORK, September 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A global coalition of 108 leading wind energy companies and associations, representing 81% of the world’s installed wind energy, has challenged governments to take radical action to increase the deployment of wind and renewable energy during this decade.
For the world to be prepared to follow the 1.5°C compatible path towards carbon neutrality, the world’s wind installations must quadrupler by 2030 to reach about 390 GW per year, according to the international energy agencyand by 2050, wind power will need to produce more than a third of the world’s electricity, up from 6% today.
But urgent action must be taken to achieve this goal and unlock the full potential of wind technology to provide safe, affordable and clean energy to communities around the world.
The Global Wind Energy Coalition manifesto for COP27 warns that while wind power is one of the most competitive, mature and rapidly deployable energy technologies we have today, to thrive it needs large, stable and visible volumes to deploy and a strong global supply chain.
We can only achieve this through clear and practical actions, detailed in the manifesto, including:

urgently simplify planning and permitting programs for grid-scale renewable energy projects;

rapidly build critical network infrastructure for clean energy integration and cross-sector decarbonization;

evolve electricity markets to encourage investment in renewable energy generation and enable citizens to benefit from affordable and secure electricity.
In a clear sign of the will of the wind sector to work together to enable the increase in the number of wind installations during this decade, among the signatories of the manifesto are, among others, the main companies in the sector, such as Iberdrola, Ørsted, EDP Renewables, Vestas, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, as well as wind power industry associations from China, Brazil, South Africa,EuropeUK, Australia and other parts of the world.
The wind industry is already generating significant growth and benefits for the global energy system in terms of safety, cost and climate. In 2021, 94 GW of wind power capacity was added globally, producing around 275 TWh of electricity per year, more than Australia’s current annual demand and enough to displace more than a third of Australia’s Russian gas imports. before the EU invasion.
But the decisions made in the COP27 and in the coming years it will determine whether the world can harness wind and renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality and ensure a sustainable, just and equitable energy transition.
